DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Advocates Human Rights and Rule of Law Committee presents a talk on “Defending Human Rights – Peace in Colombia: Another Magical Realism?’’ by Kirsty Brimelow QC\, Chair of Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales\, on Friday 28th September 2018. \nThe signing of a peace accord\, between the Farc and the Colombian State\, with pens made from bullets used in combat\, ended the longest running armed conflict in the Western hemisphere. \nBut where is the peace? Currently a human rights activist or community leader is killed every three days in Colombia. Since 2013\, Kirsty Brimelow QC has carried out mediation between a peace community of Cacao farmers\, San José de Apartadó\, and the Colombian government. She is recently returned from a visit to the community to assess the impact of the peace accord upon the rural community. \nJoin us to hear about peace\, politics and transitional justice and how you can support human rights on a global scale. \nRegistration will be from 4.30pm\, with the seminar beginning at 5pm. SUMMARY:“Perspectives of a Scottish Human Rights Lawyer in Colombia – the transition from conflict to peace” - Simon Crabb
DESCRIPTION:A Scottish human rights lawyer working in Colombia is to give a talk on his experiences in an event organised by the Faculty’s Human Rights and Rule of Law Committee. \nSimon Crabb has been in South America since 2012\, and will provide an insight into Colombia’s transition from armed conflict to peace. \nHe will examine how human rights abuses should be investigated\, prosecuted\, judged and sentenced\, and whether justice can or should be compromised in the search for peace. \n“The recent publication of the agreement on victims between the national government and the guerrilla organisation\, FARC-EP\, represents a historic step for victims of the armed conflict in Colombia\,” said Mr Crabb. \n“Its successful implementation\, in accordance with international law\, presents both challenges and opportunities for Colombian society\, the country´s institutions and the international community. \n“I greatly look forward to analysing the current situation and what lies ahead for Colombia with members of the Scottish legal profession.” \nMr Crabb completed a law degree at the University of Strathclyde before studying international law and international relations\, including conflict studies\, at the Complutense University of Madrid. \nOn returning to Scotland\, he undertook his traineeship at the Crown Office\, and worked as a Procurator Fiscal Depute in the Highlands. \nIn 2012\, he moved to Colombia as a field and advocacy officer for Peace Brigades International\, Alliance for Lawyers at Risk. Since 2013\, he has been a legal advisor and project co-ordinator in Colombia for Lawyers Without Borders\, Canada. His work has centred on human rights\, international humanitarian and international criminal law issues. \nRegistration (with tea and coffee) from 4pm. \nFollowing Simon’s talk there will be an opportunity to continue the discussion over wine.

DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Advocates and JUSTICE Scotland have great pleasure in announcing a joint event on 10 December 2015 to celebrate Human Rights Day. \nThe organisers are honoured that Sir Stephen Sedley QC and Lord Hamilton have kindly agreed to speak at the event. As can be seen from their biographies below\, both speakers are uniquely placed to speak on human rights given their distinguished careers at the very highest level. \nThe particular topic will be Freedom of Expression.
